Wren took a shower. I made coffee.

When she came out of my bedroom - her wet hair falling past her shoulders, an I had great sex smirk still planted on her face - I caught myself frozen with a cup of coffee in each hand.

It almost felt like Remi had punched me right in the left side of my chest.

Like my heart was going to give out.

Only it raced a little quicker than normal.

“Wow,” I whispered.

“What?” Wren asked.

“You look…” My eyes moved down. They went wider. “Pregnant.”

“Pregnant?”

I put the coffee cups down. “Wren, you have a baby bump showing.”

It was the first time I really noticed it without really looking.

That meant sometime between last night and this morning she must have grown. Or something.

Wren looked down at her stomach.

She let out a gasp and pulled at the front of her shirt.

As soon as she let go, her shirt popped back up, showing off the bare skin of her pregnant belly.

It was beautiful.

“Fuck,” she said.

She spun around and ran toward the bedroom, slamming the door shut behind her.

I gritted my teeth and wondered if what I had said was wrong.

She was pregnant though. That wasn’t a secret.

I wasn’t calling her the f-word or anything.

Her stomach was supposed to get bigger. Rounder. Fuller.

I thought of other words to use.

Plump…?

That didn’t sound right at all.

No matter what word or words came to mind, I had to go into the bedroom and check on Wren.

This was the reason why the one-night stand thing could never become something more.

But I was far beyond that, wasn’t I?

Wren was pregnant and I had given her my place to live in.

On top of that, I stayed the night. In my own apartment, in my own bed, yet I was kind of the outsider.

I walked to the bedroom and slowly opened the door.

Wren sat on the corner of the bed, her face in her hands.

“Hey,” I said.

She shook her head. “Don’t.”

Instead of talking, I took a trip to my closet and grabbed one of my old jerseys.

I tossed it to the bed and Wren looked at it, then me.

I shrugged my shoulders. “That’ll work, right?”

“To cover me up?”

“I don’t think you need to be covered up at all, sweetie. I think you look beautiful right now.”

She curled a hand around the jersey. “Sorry, Abel. I hate that it bothers me like that. Or, not that it bothers me… it’s just…”

“I get it,” I said. “Everyone tries to convince women they need to be a certain size but the logic of pregnancy says otherwise.”

“Something like that,” she said. “Thank you for this.” She kind of hugged the jersey. “Hey, listen, I have an appointment today.”

“What kind of appointment?” I asked.

“For the baby. And me. Just a checkup kind of thing. They’re going to do an ultrasound though.”

“Really?”

Wren nodded. “I wasn’t sure if I should tell you. I don’t want you to feel pressured to go or anything. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”

I moved toward the bed and crouched down in front of Wren.
